When is machine vision the right tool vs. sensors or gauges?
When features are visual/positional: defect detection, presence/absence, ID/traceability, and dimensional checks (2D/3D). Vision handles multiple features simultaneously and tolerates part variation better than single-threshold sensors; gauges may still be preferred for a single critical dimension with tight GR&R on fixed fixtures.
Use 2D for contrast/texture, labels, OCR/1D/2D codes, edges. Use 3D (laser triangulation/structured-light/ToF) when height/warp matters: planarity, volume, Z-position, pallet alignment. Criteria: required Z-accuracy, surface reflectivity, occlusions, and takt time.
